'Where pupils are exceptionally well cared for and supported' – Ofsted July 2011

2W

To complement our Dungeons and Dragons topic, 2W visited Arundel Castle on Wednesday 5th October 2011. Although the weather was a bit miserable, this didn’t dampen the children’s spirits and they had a really enjoyable day.

2W started the day with a tour of the Armoury and Baron’s Hall. The children then dressed up as soldiers, servants and jesters in the education room. They then visited the inner gatehouse and saw the portcullis that would have been lowered in times of battle. The children were enthused by the ‘oubliette’, into which the enemy would be thrown and forgotten! After lunch, 2W climbed up the (many) steps to the medieval keep; this is the most secure part of the castle with fantastic views over the Sussex countryside.

Back at school, the children will now use their experiences at Arundel Castle in their English learning (Fantasy Stories) alongside their ongoing topic work. We are looking to be building our own drawbridges very soon!
