Year 3

Spring Term Overview 2014

What did the Romans ever do for us?

Our theme this term is the Romans. We will begin by looking at the Celts and how they lived including their homes, clothes, food, warriors and beliefs. We will start learning about the Celts because we feel the children need to learn about the Celts in order to understand more about the Romans. We then move on to looking at the Roman way of life and comparing this to our own lives. We will examine the extent of the Roman empire and find out how Britain benefited from the Romans coming to Britain e.g. they brought lots of previously unknown vegetables into the country. We will also learn about other benefits from the Roman invasion; the building of roads, baths and more.

We will link our Art and DT through creating pop pages for a History book.

We will be looking at patterns in Art and using this to create mosaics and printing as a link to our Topic.

It is anticipated that we will include cookery during the term, linking this as much as possible to our topic, possibly having a Roman Feast one afternoon. We will be using the internet to research information.

In English we will be studying Legends, Letter writing  and Non-chronological reports.

After half term we are looking at Information Texts, Playscripts and story writing We will link our report writing and information text to our topic about Romans.

In our Maths learning we will be covering data handling, fractions and shape. Alongside this we will be covering the four operations, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division. We will be measuring weight, capacity and length and solving word problems across the range. We have an off-site visit planned to Butser Hill Farm to link in with our topic. 3T will be going on 4th March and 3B will be going on 6th March. On Friday 21st March, Year 3 will be taking part in a fish cookery workshop. After the success of our year 3 assembly in December., we would like to share our work about the Celts and the Romans with you on 27th March. We will let you know the time nearer the date.

In RE we are learning about Purim; Good and Evil and the key events of the Easter Story. Please remind your child to have their PE kit in school all week. Our PE days are now Tuesday and Thursday. Thank you for the help you are giving the children with their Learning Logs. The children are really enjoying completing these.

We are currently sending our explorers out to investigate what can be found beneath their feet. Rocks….soil…creatures…

Please help them in this quest for knowledge and discovery!

Welcome to Autumn Term 2013

The Y3 teachers are Mrs Brazier (3B) and Mr Thomas (3T)

THE WORLD BENEATH OUR FEET

In Year 3 we will be studying volcanoes and all things to do with rocks and materials. We will also be exploring how humans cope with surviving natural disasters. We will also be using maps to identify where different volcanoes are located and improving our map reading skills.

Last year we designed labels for soup cans and made our own volcanic soup. This was a very popular learning opportunity which we will be repeating this year.

We will be investigating the world beneath our feet and using clay to create fossil prints and 3D sculptures.
In the second half of the term, we will be investigating St Lucia.

Our English learning will be linked to our topic through writing  diary entries, newspaper reports, information leaflets  performance poetry and creation myths.

On Thursday 12th September we will be visiting All Saints Church as part of our RE learning of Baptism.

If you would like to support your child in their learning or Learning Logs (homework), it would be great if you could:
• carry out some research at the library or on the internet
• create drawings, paintings or models of rocks /volcanoes
• read poems, stories, news articles about volcanoes or natural disasters
• cook a dish/desert with a volcano theme

If you would like further help or information feel free to ask your child’s teacher and they will be delighted to help. Mrs Brazier and Mr Thomas are looking forward to getting to know their class further and meeting their parents and / or carers.
