'Where pupils are exceptionally well cared for and supported' – Ofsted July 2011

Year 5

Summer Term 2013 – Fairtrade

Our Summer term topic is based around ‘Fair Trade’ and will have a strong geography/Visions, Aims and values focus.

The children will be developing their reading comprehension skills in order to prepare them for Year 6 and in writing we will be focusing on ‘dramatic conventions’ in order to write ‘scripts’ in a variety of formats.

In Maths children will continue to improve their mental maths skills using the new CLIC maths format, as well as following key objectives such as fractions, decimals, percentages and word problems using all four operations. They will be developing their written and mental calculations, as well as problem solving abilities.

As scientists we will be studying life cycles, particularly focusing on plants. We believe that it is important for the children to have a ‘hands on’ approach to science, and therefore we will be conducting a number of experiments, as well as how to analyse the data to draw conclusions. In R.E. we will be learning about the Eucharist and Jesus’ Messages. This will aid our Community Cohesion work and help us to better understand the society within which we live.

In Art and DT we will be designing and making our very own Fair Trade t-shirts. We will be researching and analysing product design, taking into account costing and sustainability. The pupils will be using a range of skills and materials to create an eye-catching, trendy t-shirt. These can then be auctioned at a fashion show. The proceeds will be used towards an end of term celebratory trip! As geographers we will be looking at how Fair Trade supports developing third world countries to live more sustainable lives.

The pupils will be using ICT to carry out their own research projects on the farmers that produce these products as well as using ‘Scratch’ to learn simple control and coding skills. In outdoor PE we will be focusing on basic athletics skills (sprinting, hurdling, jumping and throwing) as well as some striking and fielding games.

In VAV (formally known as PSHCE) we will be learning about changes to our bodies. We will also explore how people cope with disabilities and develop targets to take forward into the new school year.

Spring Term 2013 – Grand Designs Overview

Our main topic for this term is “Grand Designs” .We will be exploring ‘ Life in Ancient Greece’ to include looking at their architecture , clothing, cultures, leisure and religion (including Greek Gods and Goddesses). We will find out about the how ‘Ancient Greek’ culture affected our language and the impacts the ‘Greeks’ had on how we behave today (medicine, democracy etc).

We will link our art and DT to the topic as much as possible. In art we will be studying ‘Ancient Greek’ pottery and how they were decorated and in D.T. we will explore Chariots and 3D structures from ‘Ancient Greece.’

We plan to link our English with our topic work as much as possible as well, so we will be looking at stories from other cultures and writing our own. Later we will be looking at writing persuasively as well as exploring Film Narrative. After half term we will be looking at further performance poetry and Older written Literature such as ‘Treasure Island’.

In maths we will be covering a range of themes, including the four operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, solving puzzles and word problems, understanding shape, handling data, fractions and decimals and measuring weight, capacity and length.

As always any support you can give your child at home is much appreciated.

This term we will be covering two science topics. We will begin with “Changing Sound’ were we will examine vibrations, pitch and tone with various instruments. The second topic is Space related “Sun, Moon and Earth”. In this unit children will build on their existing knowledge of the planets and how the Sun and Moon relate to what happens on Earth.

As yet, we haven’t arranged a trip for the children for this term. We are hoping to include a possible visit to a Planetarium to support or Science learning and also visit to a local Mosque to support or Religious Education Unit .We will send out a letter as soon as we have definitely arranged anything.

Thank you to all of you, who help your child with their learning logs. Please continue to do so as we know your child appreciates it.

Can we also remind you that 5F/5G need PE kits on Mondays and Thursdays.

As always thank you for your continued support, if you have any queries do not hesitate to contact us in person or through email.

Fit for 5 Autumn Term 2012 Overview

Our main learning focus for this term is ‘Fit For Five’.

We have linked our English learning with our topic work as much as possible so we will be looking at lots of pieces of writing involving Healthy Eating, Diet, Exercise and the body. We will start the term by exploring the use of persuasive language with a view to writing letters, encouraging children to eat more fruit also persuading the school canteen to offer even more healthy meals. After that we will be exploring ‘fables’ including writing our own and finally moving on to instruction texts, recipes and methods.

In our maths learning  we will be covering a range of themes, including the four operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, solving puzzles and word problems, understanding shape, handling data, fractions and decimals and measuring weight, capacity and length. As always any support you can give your child at home is much appreciated.

This term we will begin our science learning with our ’Keeping Healthy’ topic and the children will learn about food groups, benefits of a healthy diet, heart rate, pulse and exercise. Your child will be coming home with a learning log this term, this will contain tasks to be completed at home. This should allow your child to plan and present their work in their own style. Please ensure the Learning Log is completed and returned to school each Tuesday, where it will be shared, marked and a new log issued. Homework club is available in Year 5 on Tuesdays from 3.15 pm to 4.15pm. May we remind you that 5F and 5G need PE kits on Mondays and Thursdays.

As always thank you for your continued support, if you have any queries do not hesitate to contact us in person or through email.

 Summer Term 2012 – Fairtrade

As a community we are becoming more globally aware. We believe that it is important for our  children to develop an understanding of not only their local environment, but also the affects their actions can have on other people from around the world. This will be explored in greater detail and where possible, we will be linking all of this to our curriculum work.

Due to the continuing wide ranging needs of our pupils we will remain in streamed English groups this term. The children will be developing their reading comprehension skills in order to prepare them for Year 6.
In Maths children will continue to work in streamed groups.
As geographers we will be looking at how Fair Trade supports developing third world countries to live more sustainable lives. The pupils will be using ICT to carry out their own research projects on the farmers that produce these products.
In outdoor PE we will be using the Olympics as a stimulus to experience a variety of the Olympic and Para-Olympic sports. In indoor PE we will be developing our movements in Dance and Gymnastics and moving with more control and grace, considering our audience. We will also be visiting The Mountbatten Centre to use their pool.
In VAV (formally known as PSHCE) we will be learning about changes to our bodies. We will also explore how people cope with disabilities and develop targets to take forward into the new school year.

Spring Term 2012 – Grand Designs Overview

The Ancient Greeks were the greatest architects of their time and many of their designs and ways of living influence our society today. This will be explored in greater detail and where possible, we will be linking all of this to our curriculum work.

Due to the wide ranging needs of our pupils we have developed a streamed English plan, where some children will be receiving specific sentence and word level teaching to address their needs. Where it is appropriate this will be delivered through the genre ‘Myths and Legends’ focusing on Greek Myths and local legends followed by film narrative.

In Maths children will be improving their awareness of number by refining and developing any calculation strategies they are currently using and extending their awareness of place value. They will be working more with decimal numbers and using this knowledge to apply to mathematical investigations.

As scientists we will be studying the Earth, Moon and Sun and developing our awareness of the different methods of collecting scientific data, when experiments are not appropriate. We will also be learning about changing sounds and completing a variety of experiments.

In R.E. we will be learning about the concept ‘authority’ in relation to Muhammad and The Qur’an and the concept ‘symbol’ in relation to a Christian’s view of the Empty Cross.  This will aid our Community Cohesion work and help us to better understand the society within which we live.

As artists we will be exploring different paints and painting techniques to produce masks and pottery depicting the Ancient Greek way of life. This will be linked to out DT in which we will be creating 3D structures with a Greek influence and using a range of materials and techniques to do so.

As geographers we will be looking at how our local environment has been influenced by Greek Design and how specific architectural designs have impacted their localities due to the impact of tourists.

As historians we will be using our investigation skills to understand how written records and historical artefacts can inform us of the past. Although, we will also be learning that some evidence needs to be considered carefully as it may provide an inaccurate picture of the past if viewed alone.

In outdoor PE we will be developing our awareness of team games and strategies, whilst improving our striking and fielding techniques to play Rounders. UNLESS THERE IS SEVERE BAD WEATHER WE WILL CONTINUE TO TEACH PE OUTSIDE. PLEASE ENSURE YOUR CHILD HAS AN APPROPRIATE, WARM PE KIT. In indoor PE we will learning how our body and movements can be interpreted, through the medium of ‘Street Dance’.

In ICT we will be exploring how ICT can assist in communicating and collaboration. We will be using ‘blogging’ to explore and investigate our topic and communicate this to a wider audience. In order to do this we will be developing our personal understanding of the safety issues that need to be considered when using ICT. We hope that the children will be able to continue this learning outside of their school environment.

In PSHCE we will be learning how to better understand others. This will be linked to the Ancient Greek development of democracy. We will be considering how our actions affect others and how we should be considerate of those around us in our immediate, local, national and international environment.
