Year 5

Autumn Term 2014 – Welcome into Year 5

Our learning focus for this term is ‘Changes – for better for worse.’ We will be linking this focus to many of our subjects.

We start off by looking at Ancient Greece and the Olympics and making a comparison with modern-day Greece and the Olympics. We will be linking this to our English through the study of Greek myths. We will then focus on a book called ‘Street Child,’ set in Victorian times. This links in with the offer of a trip to see Oliver at the Groundlings Theatre on 3rd October. We are also hoping to organise a trip to the Victorian Christmas Festival at the Historic Dockyards at the beginning of December. We will be using drama in our English and different writing genres. Once again we will be making comparisons between the Victorians and modern-day life.

In Maths we will be covering a range of themes, including the four operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, solving puzzles and word problems, understanding shape, handling data, fractions and decimals and measuring weight, capacity and length.

As always any support you can give your child at home is much appreciated, particularly with regards to times tables (x4, x8, x6, x7)

This term, in Science, we will be studying Earth, Sun and Moon and Changing Sounds. We have organised a trip to the Odeon cinema at Port Solent to see Earth to Echo with some follow-up work after.

Your child will be coming home with a learning log this term, this will contain work to be done at home. This should allow the child to plan and present their work in their own style. Please ensure the learning log is completed and returned to school each Tuesday, where it will be shared, marked and a new log issued. Can we also remind you that 5T and 5B need PE kits on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

From Tuesday 30th September, year 5 will be going swimming each week for a period of 10 weeks. A coming letter will give you all of the details about this opportunity.

As always thank you for your continued support, if you have any queries do not hesitate to contact us in person or through email.

D-Day Focus Day

As part of the whole school focus day remembering the incredible heroism of those who took part in D-Day seventy years ago, year 5 pupils wrote fictional recounts based on historical research into the remarkable events of that day.  A selection of their work is available for viewing here.  Please note, you may need to increase the volume on your computers for some recordings.

…….We are experiencing technical difficulties – look back soon to find the videos!!

Summer Term 2014- Fair Trade and Victorians.

This term year 5 will be looking at the Victorians and fair trade. We are going to do lots of work around an excellent books called Street Child, writing letters stories and recounts as characters and Victorian children. We are even hoping to have a Victorian Themed trip to bring our learning to life. Later in the term we will be looking at Fair Trade and how this has changed in recent years.

In Maths children will continue to improve their mental maths skills using the new CLIC maths format, as well as following key objectives such as fractions, decimals, percentages and word problems using all four operations. They will be developing their written and mental calculations, as well as problem solving abilities.

As scientists we will be studying life cycles, particularly focusing on plants. We believe that it is important for the children to have a ‘hands on’ approach to science, and therefore we will be conducting a number of experiments, as well as how to analyse the data to draw conclusions. In R.E. we will be learning about the Eucharist and Jesus’ Messages. This will aid our Community Cohesion work and help us to better understand the society within which we live.

In outdoor PE we will be focusing on basic athletics skills (sprinting, hurdling, jumping and throwing) as well as some striking and fielding games.

In VAV (formally known as PSHCE) we will be learning about changes to our bodies. We will also explore how people cope with disabilities and develop targets to take forward into the new school year.

Spring Term 2014 – Grand Designs Overview

Our main topic for this term is “Grand Designs” .We will be exploring ‘Life in Ancient Greece’ to include looking at their architecture, clothing, cultures, leisure and religion (including Greek Gods and Goddesses). As always any support you can give your child at home is much appreciated.

This term we will be covering two science topics. We will begin with “Changing Sound’ where we will examine vibrations, pitch and tone with various instruments. The second topic is Space related – “Sun, Moon and Earth”. In this unit children will build on their existing knowledge of the planets and how the Sun and Moon relate to what happens on Earth.

We are hoping to visit a Planetarium to support our Science learning and also a possible visit to a local Mosque to support or Religious Education Unit .We will send out a letter as soon as we have definitely arranged anything.

Thank you to all of you, who help your child with their learning logs. Please continue to do so as we know your child appreciates it.  We would also love to see some parents or carers at our Wednesday E.R.I.C reading sessions – this is simply a session to hear your children, or other children from the class, reading.  It runs every Wednesday from 08:45 to 09:15.
